MALAYALAM 5 SUNDARIKAL

Tamil film Sirikkathe (1939) was the first anthology film made in India.
Chithramela (1967) directed by Muthaiya was the first in Malayalam. While, all
the 3 episodes of Chithramala were directed by Muthaiya itself, it was Kerala
Cafe (2009) which had different short stories directed by different makers. 5 Sundharikal is one such rare film with more than one director. It is a
collection of five short-stories directed by five different directors.
1. Shyju Khalid’s ‘Sethulakshmi’: Heart-breaking. The maker had deliberately
given viewers the freedom to imagine what is happening and what will happen,
which eventually made the story more touching. Anika, the child artist amazes
with her gestures, brilliant performance. The movie starts with this short-film.
2. Sameer Thahir’s ‘Esha’: Starts slowly with uninteresting incidents and ends
slowly with disengaging incident.
3. Aashiq Abu’s ‘Gowry’: Visuals cannot impact viewers when script fails, this
is an example.
4. Amal Neerad’s ‘Kullante Bharya’: A beautiful romantic story which evokes
applause towards the end. Thanks to Dulquer’s voice over and background music.
What breaks is this short-film moves more like a story-telling and not like a
story-presenting. The whole story is told through voice-over; even few pictures
would have created the same impact.
5. Anwar Rasheed’s ‘Aami’: The best of all. ‘Aami’ is a drama centered on a
happy married couple and the deepness of their relationship. Romance in this
film is its purest, yet magnificent form. This movie was really amazing. Instead
of being simply entertaining, or beautiful it achieves what other films fails to
do, it becomes a learning lesson. It makes you think what is really important.
Yet another impressive work by Anwar Rasheed.
No worry about technical side, a technically brilliant team is behind the whole
concept. Visuals are eye soothing and music helps to create the needed emotion
which the respective script missed.
What went wrong and what went right: ‘Gowry’ and ‘Esha’s looks more like a script developed for the sake of matching the title of the film, ‘5 Sundarikal’ while the first one, ‘Sethulakshmi’ had enough free space to develop, the other two (‘Aami’ and ‘Kullante Bharya’) cleverly left the ‘title’ side way and presented the ‘female character’ through the lead male characters.
First half starts with a heart-breaking story, first half ends badly, second half starts beautifully & second half ends with a bang.
A collection of short-films were a bit more than the half is bitter and the rest is sweet.
5 Sundarikal (English: Five Women) is an upcoming Malayalam romantic anthology film. It contains five short stories on love about five types of women - mother, daughter, lover, wife and actress. The stories are directed by Anwar Rasheed, Aashiq Abu, Sameer Thahir, Shyju Khalid and Amal Neerad.
