MALAYALAM THIRA

Movie Review by PS Arjun (Rating : 4.5/5)
* Thira is the second trilogy ever made in India, after Satyajit Ray's Apu.
Thira (Waves) - It never stops, it comes and goes again and again, it continues, it's a never ending thing. The title connects with the film in many ways. The plot is there in the title itself. It was wonderful to see Shobana in such a powerful character after a long long time. Great. Dyan (Son of Actor Sreenivasan) had made an impressive debut. He is here to stay. A good supporting casts. All works well. Music by Shaan is a major asset of Thira so is the camera work. A delicate balance of talents and weighs in perfectly.
Vineeth Sreenivasan. Salute to him for making such a film. Fast becoming one of the best makers of Malayalam cinema industry. Have a style of making which is very different from others in the industry. A style that reminds of Tamil director, Gautham Menon. He had experimented this time with camera movements which hardly or never been static in the whole film, a kind which you in Brazilian or Mexican realistic thrillers. It might give an odd feeling for a few but works well in developing the overall tempo.
A fantastic film, it reaches your expectations, rarely does a film accomplishes that. Watch it, not only because it is well made but also because it has a very important and serious theme!
Watching this film reminds you once again that everyday people get away with anything in this world and the victim's stories will never be told or remembered unless there is a need for political publicity. There are many great documentaries around the world about human trafficking, like 'Rape for Profit', 'The Day My God Died' and 'Sex + Money: A National Search for Human Worth', and there are numerous movies also which deals with the same issue, mainly made in Spanish or Portuguese focusing many such events happened in Maxico and Brazil.
Christian Duguay's Human Trafficking (2005) is one film which made me think more about it, and also can break any heart. India is not far behind and still hardly we had a film which discuss about it well. Always wondered why Indian film industry hardly tried this theme. Kamak Haasan's Mahanadhi must be the only other film which could make people think and feel about the victims. Earlier this year another Malayalam film, 'Karmayodha' dealt the same theme but failed to reach viewers. Thira is one rare good film from India on the genre. Thira reminds me, in a good way, of the great movie Trade (2007) directed by Marco Kreuzpaintner.
It is moving, makes you think about it and it thrills and melts your brain.. A really gripping and emotional movie.
