The team behind the super hit film 'Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha' - M.T. Vasudevan, Hariharan and Mammootty gets together after a long span of about eighteen years for a new venture 'Pazhassi Raja'.

The historical movie spans the life of the 'Lion of Kerala' King Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja of the Kottayam Royal family. This was 50 years before the sepoy mutiny. Unfortunately, history has not recorded Pazhassi's role in one of the earliest independence struggles of India.

 Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja was a ruler of Malabar(North Kerala). Very little is told of this man in the history books of this country. Little do people know that the real ‘first war of Indian Independence’ was fought by him. India did not rise 50 years hence in 1857 as our textbooks teach us but in the first decade of the 19^th century itself in a war Pazhassi fought with the British from the forests of Wayanad with the help of the adivasis there. But then the British, probably because they did not want the rest of country to know and be inspired by this one-off revolt, buried all information about Pazhassi and his war and belittled it terming it- just a minor revolt.

But the legends are legends, and history is never complete unless they are given the right place. 
Mammootty plays the pivotal role of Pazhassi Raja. The role will definitely be a challenge for him. Tamil actor Sarath Kumar will make his Malayalam debut in the movie as Pazhassi Raja's trusted commander-in-chief Dalapathy. He has allocated special dates for this film and is fully focused on completing it as soon as possible. Kanika is the female lead. The others in the star cast include Kalabhavan Mani, Padmapriya, Jagathy Sreekumar, Thilakan, Murali Manohar, Linda Arsenio and Manoj K. Jayan. Lakshmi Rai from Belgaum plays a seductive role in the film.

The film being made with the latest technical advancements and with a budget of about 32 crores is produced by Gokulam Gopalan. Venu handles the camera. Music maestro Illayraja creates music for the songs penned by O.N.V. Kurup. The film shot in and around Thalasserry.
